Mickie
Mickie is a one month-old appendix quarter horse colt. He was
born with windswept feet on both front and hind. His hind legs straightened
out very nicely, as did his left front leg, but his right front
did not have much promise of improvement. The attending veterinarian
believed he would need corrective surgery if nothing was done to
help him.
Equine Prosthetics made a custom brace for him that supported
and corrected the valgus (bowleg) deformity. He is walking comfortably
and owners report are no signs of discomfort or rubs of any kind.
As prescribed, Mickie only needs to wear his brace 4 hours a day.
The owners reported an immediate improvement in just the first day
with a lateral drop-knee gait only when he was tired. We will post
pictures of him when he has completed his therapy.
Update: January 2002. Mickie wore his brace for 4-6 hours
a day last summer for two to three months. As of this winter he
has grown considerably and as these pictures and Mickie's
video show, his leg looks great. He is straight and travels
normally. We have every expectation that he will continue to do
well and have a normal healthy life. Please see Kitty's
memo for a first-hand account.
