Emily is an
five year old poodle schnauzer mix that was rescued after suffering
a fracture of her right forleg. She was unable to move and subsequently
had lost her paw just below the carpus due to frostbite.
After being
rescued, Emily spent several months in a cast to repair her leg
and gaining the trust of her new owner. It was almost a year afterwards
when we started to work with her. At that point in time Emily
was able to walk on soft ground such as carpets, but not on hard
floors or outdoors. She did not have surgery to remove the residual
carpal bones, but because of her small size and her relative comfort
walking on soft surfaces it was determined that we would try to
work with her residual limb without further trauma to her.
We molded
her leg and fashioned a simple pegleg with a soft liner insert
that would cushion her limb. We were especially careful to make
sure the distal end of her stump would take as little pressure
as possible. Emily did wonderfully! The very first night she had
her prosthetic she went for a walk outside. You can see her first
few steps on Emily's
video.
