Beauty Grace

Beauty is a one-year old female Doberman mix. She was found in a drain ditch as a very young puppy in extremely poor condition and missing her right front leg distal to the carpus. Radiographs show she has a congenital deformity with little or no ulna and carpus.

Beauty Grace has been lucky to find a wonderful home with a caring and loving owner. Her owner has worked hard with Beauty to get her past the trauma of abandonment and the pain of trying to walk on a missing leg. Without her help, Beauty would never have accepted the work and handling required to make her a prosthetic.

Beauty was fitted with a simple "peg-leg" prosthetic that would allow her to learn how to walk on four legs because she does not have any remembrance of 'four legs'. This would allow her to bend down to eat as other dogs (rather than lay down, or have her bowls raised). It would also allow her to turn and walk more normally and develop muscle that she has never used. If she continues to do well with this device, we will try to improve upon the technique to give her more ease of mobility.

It is important to note here that animals have a "gadget tolerance". Some animals will learn to handle different more complicated prosthetics/orthotics right away, but most will require time to adjust and learn new methods of walking much the same as humans. You can see her taking her very first steps on Beauty's video.
